Nickelodeon has released the first look at their upcoming live-action version of SpongeBob SquarePants, and it’s as weird as you’d expect.
With Disney taking the leap and turning almost all of its classic movies into live-action blockbusters, to celebrate SpongeBob’s 20th Anniversary, Nickelodeon is giving it a stab too. But before you think they’re just going to re-use the dish sponge and starfish on a stick, you’ll be surprised as to what they’re actually doing.
Rather than attempting to make something unreal look real (looking at you, Sonic), Nickelodeon is using the voice actors behind SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick, Mr. Krabbs, and more to play their characters in real life.
Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) will be starring in the hour-long special titled “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout”.
What’s more, David Hasselhoff, Kel Mitchell (Keenan & Kel), Jack Griffo (The Thundermans), and Daniella Perkins (Knight Squad) will also guest star in the feature-long episode.
SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout is set to Friday, premier on July 12, at 7 p.m. on Nickelodeon.
