The rise of the micro-console looks set to continue, as SEGA has announced another 10 strong set of titles to join the catalog of their upcoming SEGA Mega Drive Mini.

There are certainly some interesting additions this tie around, including fighting game royalty, the blue bomber’s greatest hits, and a hidden Sonic gem…

Here are the newly added titles in the UK and the US:

  1. Mega Man: The Wily Wars
  2. Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition
  3. Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
  4. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  5. Beyond Oasis
  6. Golden Axe
  7. Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium
  8. Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball
  9. Vectorman
  10. Wonder Boy in Monster World

Of course, Street Fighter 2 and The Wily Wars (a collection of Mega Man 1, 2 and 3, a clever way around their original NES release) are the standouts here, rightly bringing the most excitement. Personally though, Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball and Vectorman have really caught my eye.

The former is actually a really solid pinball game, with a unique aesthetic and catchy as hell music. The latter, a run and gun platformer that really deserved more attention. For me, these are the games which highlight the strength of these retro consoles being re-released, as these titles receive exposure to a whole new generation.

So far, we know 30 of the 40 games set to be included on the system, meaning there is even more room for equally as impressive titles to be added. The 20 previously announced games are:

  1. Earthworm Jim
  2. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  3. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
  4. World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
  5. Contra: Hard Corps
  6. Streets of Rage 2
  7. Thunder Force 3
  8. Super Fantasy Zone
  9. Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master
  10. Landstalker
  11. Sonic the Hedgehog
  12. Ecco the Dolphin
  13. Castlevania: Bloodlines
  14. Space Harrier 2
  15. Shining Force
  16. Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  17. ToeJam & Earl
  18. Comix Zone
  19. Altered Beast
  20. Gunstar Heroes

Impressive, isn’t it? The SEGA Mega Drive Mini is to be released on September 19, at $79.99. It’s actually ridiculously good value for money. Who knows, if the system does well we might even see the resurgence of a few names on the list.
