The pre-E3 rumor mill is hard at work making the best news flour, and if the signs are true, fans of top-down or isometric RPGs, myself included, should brace themselves: A new Baldur’s Gate is coming!
Not only that but it’s being developed by the current kings of the genre Larian Studios. First, let’s step back a little. It all began with this tiny teaser on the Belgian studio’s website showing an ominous and slightly animated image of a three in Roman numerals.
From here, Twitter user kunkken, apparently some kind of Russian hacker or technical wizard, snooped around a bit more and found this:
Well, if that’s no reason to get excited, I don’t know what is!
The Baldur’s Gate series of CRPGs laid dormant since basically 2001, with the release of the expansion pack Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Baal by BioWare. Enhanced Editions of both Baldur’s Gate I and II have been released, but games like Shadowrun Returns, Pillars of Eternity and Divinity: Original Sin have truly brought the genre back in a big way.
If this all turns out to be true and Larian Studios are indeed on board I think we’re in for one hell of a comeback. If you have seen the documentary on the development of Divinity: Original Sin it definitely seems like making a new Baldur’s Gate would be a dream come true for the studio and an absolute passion project. We’ll just have to wait and see but I’ve already got my ticket for the hype train.
