At the tail-end of their E3 presentation, Nintendo showed off a brief teaser for a sequel to their acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The 90-second trailer shows Link and Zelda exploring a network of cavernous ruins together. As a foul-looking miasma begins to snake out from its depths, the pair come across a skeletal figure, eyes glowing, at the center of it all. Above ground, the ruins can be seen to start rising from the earth.
When it launched in 2017 for both the Switch and the Wii U, Breath of the Wild received universal acclaim and achieved record-breaking success. Whether or not this sequel manages to emulate its predecessor’s triumphs remains to be seen, and the bar for excellence has certainly been set high.
Nintendo’s priority is likely on the remake of Link’s Awakening for the time being, so there’s no telling yet when we’ll see more of Breath of the Wild’s unnamed sequel. For the time being, we’ll have to be content with knowing that it’s on the way.
