Detective Pikachu has been racking up popularity points since its initial release in early May. Believe it or not, it is still in theaters in some places, and was just recently crowned the second highest grossing videogame film of all time.
The numbers were tracked by Box Office Mojo, show a domestic gross of $143,102,251 and a total worldwide gross of $429,102,251. This has pushed Pokémon Detective Pikachu past 2018’s Rampage. Rampage topped at $428,028,233 worldwide.
Unchallenged at the top of the highest grossing videogames of all time list is the 2016 Warcraft movie. Warcraft is still far ahead of Pokémon Detective Pikachu with a worldwide gross totaling $433,677,183. Surprisingly, though, Pokémon Detective Pikachu is actually astronomically far ahead of Warcraft in terms of domestic profits: Warcraft only made $47,365,290 on the local scale.
Regardless of who is the top dog where, these numbers are all still pretty impressive, considering the film industry’s dodgy history with videogame-based films. And who knows? Detective Pikachu is still playing in limited locations. Maybe it will topple Warcraft globally. Maybe.
