Since it launched in May 2016, Overwatch has added a new playable hero to its roster every July, but 2019 is going to be an exception.

In a recent video update, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan shed some light on when players should expect the new hero. A new character is absolutely in the works for this summer, but they will be “released a little bit later than you’re used to.”

This is a slight break with the tradition of a new character being introduced each July. 2016 saw Ana join the roster, followed by Doomfist in 2017 and Wrecking Ball last year.

Details are scarce about the upcoming hero, though Kaplan did refer to him as “he” — so we know that much! He’s also “going to be awesome,” according to Kaplan, but that’s something players will have to decide for themselves.

It’s not all bad news, though. The annual three-week Summer Games event will start sooner than usual this year, though we weren’t given an exact date.

When we know more about Overwatch’s upcoming 31st hero, we’ll update you.
