They’re finally here: the iconic villainous organisation from the Pokémon franchise have made their dramatic entrance into the world of Pokémon Go.
It goes without saying, but Trainers should definitely prepare for trouble. New dark-coloured PokéStops began appearing in the game yesterday, and interacting with them triggers a battle with a Team Rocket Grunt. If you win, you can catch the Shadow Pokémon the Grunt leaves behind.
Shadow Pokémon have appeared in the franchise before. They previously appeared in both Pokémon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. These evil-looking variants have had their emotions closed off, turning them into unthinking fighting machines.
After you catch a Shadow Pokémon in Go, you can either keep it looking all fiendish and menacing, or use your Stardust and Candy to purify it, which seem to provide the Pokémon with a boost to their stats.
Not all Pokémon have Shadow forms, mind you. It seems to be just Gen 1 Pokémon so far, such as the three starter Pokémon and Snorlax to name a few. This new feature is still in its infancy, so we’ll have to wait and see how it changes the overall dynamic of Pokémon Go.
