Fans attending yesterday’s Pokémon Go Fest in Dortmund were treated to a hint at upcoming features for Pokémon Go, namely the impending arrival of the villainous Team Rocket.
As witnessed by Eurogamer’s Tom Phillips, who attended the event, fans were encouraged to gather for an end-of-day photo when a hot-air balloon was spotted flying overhead. In a photograph snapped by reddit user J0hnd0euf, the balloon clearly sports Team Rocket’s signature logo.
For any recluses out there who didn’t watch the Pokémon anime growing up, this is likely a nod to Jessie, James and Meowth, the Team Rocket trio in the show who regularly travel via hot-air balloon. Theirs has the design of a Meowth, though the R-shaped logo is nonetheless unmistakable.
This isn’t the first time that Team Rocket have been teased in Pokémon Go. During last month’s Go Fest in Chicago, Team Rocket members popped up in photos players took in AR mode. More recently, players datamining the game found new achievements hinting at battles with Team Rocket foes.
The next big event for Pokémon Go is this month’s Community Day, which is set for July 21. It starts at 4pm in each region’s local time and lasts for three hours, ending at 7pm. Expect to see plenty of Mudkip during that time, and perhaps there’ll be another appearance of the notorious Team Rocket.
